Name: Matt Murdock.

Canon: Daredevil (MCU).
Canon Point: Post-Season 2

Age: 33.
Appearance: Here.

History: MCU Wikia.
Personality:

  • Matt is detached. He has very few friends, and demonstrates time and time again his inability to create and maintain connections with others. It's not entirely because Matt doesn't want to form relationships, but because Matt chooses to distance himself from those around him. Following a traumatic childhood experience and being raised to believe that being alone is better, he's learned to present a facade to the world. The Matt Murdock that people see and meet is simply a cover, meant to hide what he feels is his real self. Matt's built his life on lies and (well intentioned) deceit, so he understands that letting people in means risking losing what he's carefully built walls around. He's skilled in the art of pushing people away, as well being unreliable. His secret life takes priority, resulting in lies, deception, and aloofness.

  • Like any vigilante, Matt is impulsive and reckless. Rarely does he think before acting. Matt opts for the punch first, ask questions later route more than he should, because he knows that gets results - and people are more likely to answer questions if they've been roughed up. The titles of Devil Of Hell's Kitchen, or just Daredevil, compounded with the successes he's had, has undoubtedly imbued Matt with a certain degree of invincibility. He knows he's strong and can overestimate himself. Fighting is all that Matt knows. Combined with his tendencies to veer towards the emotional, his fight or flight reflexes can get out of hand if he forgets to check himself.

  • His primary emotion is rage. Matt compartmentalizes a lot of what he feels, which manifests itself in anger more often than not. He knows that he isn't perfect, but he doesn't like being called out on it. When things don't go as planned, or if he continues to run into problems, Matt can become very frustrated. Being on the emotional, or sensitive, side, he can become heated. These are times when Matt can lose his focus. The resulting anger is not unlike a temper tantrum, and it often ends in brutality. While he is strong willed, it can easily turn into stubbornness. He has come to literal blows because of this behaviour before. He learned early on that life is unfair, that good guys often finish last or die young, and this is a source of incredible frustation for Matt. He's taken it upon himself to try and fix it, both in his daily life and his night life, so he feels his failures quite deeply.

  • Matt is self-righteous. He strongly believes that he is morally superior to almost everyone, that he is some sort of saviour to the people, though he knows that, in reality, he's morally ambiguous. He justifies his violence through his good intentions, and by the fact that he won't outwardly kill anyone - though he has no qualms with putting people on the edge of death before he's done with them. His relationship with his Catholicism creates a peculiar situation. Classically full of Catholic guilt, the beatings and pains he gets in turn are viewed as a sort of penance to his actions, because Matt enjoys being the Devil and he knows that he shouldn't. Matt's pedestal isn't entirely self-made, and everything that's put him up there has bred a quiet arrogance and selfishness. His belief that his way is the right way, or the only way, has sometimes made him blind to the needs or feelings of others.

  • Despite it all, Matt is full of good intentions. His actions are born from a desire to genuinely help people and make a difference. He's a talented enough lawyer that he could make an easy, lucrative career, but he's fine with working for nothing more than bananas or cobblers. He doesn't hesitate to put himself on the line for others, as well. The most surprising thing about Matt, perhaps, is that fore someone who has seen first hand how horrible people can be, he truly believes that everyone can be saved. He puts his trust in a fault justice system and wants to see others find the goodness within themselves, though he can't turn that perspective on himself.
